Age related skin changes including wrinkles, sun spots, dryness , loss of tone, etc., are the result of 1) genetically programmed changes (called Intrinsic Aging) and 2) environmental wear and tear on the skin (called Extrinsic Aging).  While both influence the skin’s structure and function. It is the extrinsic factors that cause the most pronounced changes.  In the past, Doctors thought skin aging was inevitable and that wrinkles, age spots, sagging skin were part of the aging process over which we had little or no control.  Today, we know differently!  Research has revealed that 80-99% of what we see on our skins as adults, is the result of exposure to daylight.  This is called Photoaging.  Therefore, only 10% of what we see on the adult skin is due to genetic factors, called Chronological Aging.  Chronological aging because it is genetically determined, can only be controlled to a small extent through healthy diet and lifestyle.  Photoaging, on the other hand, being mostly sun-induced, is very preventable!

Very recent research has revealed why this is so.  We now are beginning to understand what exactly is happening to the skin when it is exposed to UV radiation (ie:  sunlight).  These reactions to UV radiation produce what scientists call “bio-chemical triggers”.  In other words, specific reactions that induce structural changes within the skin ultimately leading to skin aging!  In the past, treating aging skin used to rely on treating the structural changes themselves the wrinkles, dryness, age spots, etc.  Today skin aging can more effectively be treated by addressing these bio-chemical reactions happening in our skin.
